Wilder S. Metcalf papers, 1888-1920.

Correspondence volumes, 1898-1919, largely letters received pertaining to his service in the Spanish-American War with the 20th Kansas Infantry Regiment and World War I; correspondence, mostly letters received, & notes, 1924-1932, primarily related to his appointment as U.S. commissioner of pensions; diaries, 1887-1920 (31 v.); a pocket ledger; certificates of appointment & membership and commissions; memoranda, 1911-1914; and a wallet with membership cards, railroad passes, and hunting licenses. Letters, 1899 May.-Nov., to Simeon Moses Fox, Topeka, Kan., talk about events in the Philippines and officers' personalities & rivalries. Included is information about his service as a legislator & general and being the recipient of the Purple Heart award. The collection also includes oversize maps pertaining to Metcalf's service in World War I and other military activities. Specifically, maps of camps and maneuver grounds in Virginia; Civil War topographical maps of Gettysburg and Antietam; World War I maps of the Balkans, Hungary, and the Somme Offensive; and a map of China's eastern coast.
